Myanmar Historical Commission

      Department of Historical Research under the Ministry of Culture has now published many Myanmar Historical Research Works of the members. In preparing their research works scholars used rare historical documents and many contemporary source materials collected in the departmental library and archives.

      Myanmar Historical Commission was formed on 26 January 1955. Originally it was composed of full time and part time ten members including Chairman. Members of the Commission are former Directors General, retired professors and research scholars. In 1991 the New was reorganized assuming the original name under the Ministry of Education. Since then the commission has been functioning its assigned duties regularly, especially holding research paper reading session almost every month, publishing research journal, annually holding international conference on Myanmar and South-East Asian Studies.

      The Historical Commission was founded on 26 January 1955 with Sithu U Kaung in the Chair, who was then Director of Education. The original members of the Commission were:

      From April 1962 to October 1964, U Pe Maung Tin undertook the duty of the Chairman of the Commission. Members were Mr. G.H. Luce, Wunna Kyaw Htin U Wun, Dr. Tha Hla, Dr. Daw Thin Kyi, Col. Ba Than(Dhammika Ba Than, Writer), U Htin Phat (Maung Htin, Writer). Since its establishment, the Commission had always been active in implementing historical research schemes for compilation of a new authentic national history.

      The Historical Commission was reorganized on 28 September 1972 into and Historical Research Department with Director General as Head of the Department. When the commission was transformed into a Universities' Historical Research Centre under the Ministry of Education in December 1986, the Director General undertook the executive and financial works. But the commission remains as it has been, with its Vice Chairman (2) who was responsible to the Minister of Education. Now it is under the Ministry of Culture,Department of Historical Research and National Library.
