Archives

    In DHR Archives is a research archives. It is the main documentation division to the Department (DHR). In its existence of about 54 years, the DHR has built up a vast collection of historical source materials on Myanmar history gathering the materials both within the country and from without. This vast collection constitutes the library and archives section of the Department. The collection has materials in various forms; printed matter such as books, newspapers, journals and magazines; rubbings of stone inscriptions; traditional manuscripts in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts as paper folding books, and microfilms of materials which are in foreign archives like the Indian Office Library and Records.

      This collection is available for use not only by members of the DHR but also other scholars both national and foreign. The collection of the DHR Archives has a comprehensive collection of information resources on Myanmar history which includes the following collections;

      The Department has an ongoing programme of source materials acquisition including an oral history project and field microfilming of palm leaf manuscripts, parabaiks and stone inscriptions.

      The Department is key participants in the National New for the Preservation of Traditional Manuscripts which was established in 1994 to address the problem of preserving manuscripts which are traditional in nature, primarily, Palm-leaf manuscripts and traditional paper folding books. But the major portion of these manuscripts are in monasteries and in private collections and are exposed to such hazards as heat, humidity, pests, insects, flood and fire. The National New has been making a catalogue of these traditional manuscripts so that they become more accessible to scholars, and more recently, it has started on a programme of microfilming the more important manuscripts to make them more readily available to scholars not only in Myanmar but also elsewhere. The DHR Library is a research library. It has a strong collections of monograph books relating to Myanmar History. It also emphasis on the political and international relations. The library collections is closely tied to the major research programmes of the Centre such as newspapers and magazines published in the Union of Myanmar since 1948 (Independence), both in English and Myanmar.

The Department of Historical Research Library was established in 1955. In Myanmar, there are four types of libraries. They were -

      (1) National Library

      (2) Universities and Colleges Library

      (3) Public Library and

      (4) Special Library

      The Department of Historical Research Library is a Special Library (or) Research Library. It has strong collection of monograph books relating to Myanmar history. The collections are closely tried to the major research programmes of the Department. The Department of Historical Research Library Objectives are:

• To help the book & periodicals for easily requirement of historical researchers

• To fulfill a need as in the Department of Historical Research

• To provide the requests from Other Ministries

• To support the Ph.D,M.Res, M.A student and teacher who are writing Dissertation, Theses & for their works of research.

The Library opens daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm except Government Gazetted holidays and weekend. Myanmar Historical New members, DHR'S staffs, teachers and students from the Universities etc… came to use the library for their research works, theses & dissertations.

 Titles and Authors catalogue cards are separated in cabinet. Those catalogues are arranged alphabetically with separate sequence by language. Books are arranged on the shelves by accession number.

     To provide the users with the best service to meet their of much knowledge on history and culture of Myanmar. The Department of Historical Research library can be accessed to information and knowledge to entire user community. The DHR Library will try the best to be more modernized and systematic works for users.
