The national races of Myanmar have residing unitedly in the Union of Myanmar since ancient time with a long history and culture of its own. There are many nationalities as many as 100 groups, with their own language and dialects. The term Myanmar embraces all nationalities: the Bamar, the Chin, the Kachin, the Kayah, the Kayin, the Mon, the Rakhine and the Shan. Each of them belongs to one of the three major racial groups: the Mon-Khmers, the Tibeto-Barman and the Thai-Shans. The Department of Historical Research tries to collect their history, culture, tradition and beliefs through field studies and oral histories. In the 21st century, the world is rapid change in term of environment by the globalization. It effect on the national races which occur conflicts on tradition and culture. Our main theme is to collect their long history and traditions. We tried to research with integrated approaches to area studies which can understand their lifestyle, tradition history and socio-economic. The project is heavily loaded and research would be implemented with the Research Fund. It will entail expenditures well beyond the regular budget of the Department. As such, financial assistance is kindly solicited both at home and abroad. The Department has an active publication programme and publishes the research work carried on in the Department, historical texts, and the Myanmar Historical Research Journal. The Department’s publications have been in Myanmar and English.
